These holidays are celebrated around the world!

I am an American and I have lived in Japan for half of my life. There are a few holidays that many countries celebrate around the world. But, many of my students don’t seem to know about it. They sometimes think that they are only celebrated only in Japan.
Recently was MOTHER’S DAY. Yes, it is celebrated around the world. Most countries celebrate it in May. In fact, the modern holiday was probably started around 1905 in the US, and then spread to other countries. But, some countries also started to celebrate this event on their own Women’s Day celebrations.
Another holiday is FATHER’S DAY. Yes, we do celebrate that in the US, too. It is coming up next month, so we are getting ready. Most countries celebrate this holiday on the 3rd Sunday in May. We basically do the same thing in America that you do in Japan.
There is one more holiday that I am always asked about: VALENTINE’S DAY. Yes, we celebrate that in America, and many countries in the world celebrate it. However, in the US, it is a bit different. We often give greeting cards to people we like. Kids exchange greeting cards in elementary schools. Men usually give more to women. One survey I read said that the average man will spend $150 US for Valentine’s Day and a woman will spend less than $75US. Well, of course, White Day is a Japanese holiday. ? (Williams R. T.)
